Therapies include: ● Reflexology - Therapeutic Foot Massage Reflexology is a type of massage that focuses primarily on the hands and feet. The technique dates back to the early 1900s and is based on the theory that there are areas on the hands and feet that correspond to specific parts of the body. The actual massage consists of the therapist applying pressure to key points on the hands and feet. Reflexology is known to be a very relaxing form of massage, especially for people who stand on their feet all day or just have tired, achy feet. ● Swedish Massage Swedish massage is the most common type of massage in the United States. With Swedish massage therapy, the therapists first apply oil or lotion and then utilize long smooth strokes, circular movements and kneading techniques on shallow layers of muscle. Swedish massage therapy generally uses light pressure thus resulting in a gentle and relaxing massage experience. It can be used to relieve muscle tension and pain as well as increase flexibility and range of motion. ● Deep Tissue Massage Focusing on realigning the deeper layers of muscles and associated connective tissue, deep tissue massage uses slow movements and heavy pressure to achieve results. Deep tissue massage is useful for chronic conditions such as stiff necks, backs and shoulders. It can also be helpful to people recovering from injuries to muscles, tendons and ligaments. ● Acupressure Therapy Acupressure is an ancient Chinese healing method that involves applying pressure to certain meridian points on the body to relieve pain. The human body has fourteen "meridians" that carry energy throughout the body. These meridians start at the fingertips, connect to the brain, and then connect to the organ associated with the specific meridian. ● Shiatsu Massage Shiatsu is a form of massage based on the holistic system of traditional Chinese medicine. Localized finger and palm pressure is utilized in a rhythmic sequence on acupuncture meridians to improve the natural flow of energy called qi. In more scientific terms, shiatsu massage helps to calm the sympathetic nervous system resulting in improved circulation, the relaxation of stiff muscles and reduction of stress. ● Traditional Chinese Massage Tuina (Tui Na) is an Oriental Bodywork Therapy that has been used in China for 2,000 years. Tuina uses the traditional Chinese medical theory of the flow of Qi through the meridians as its basic therapeutic orientation. Through the application of massage and manipulation techniques Tuina seeks to establish a more harmonious flow of Qi through the system of channels and collaterals, allowing the body the naturally heal itself. ● Thai Massage Originating in India and making its way to Thailand over 2500 years ago, Thai massage is a unique form of massage. Unlike most massage modalities, Thai massage involves the therapist using her hands, knees, legs and feet to move and stretch you into a series of positions. Also referred to as Thai yoga massage, because the positions utilized by the therapist are similar to those in yoga. The major difference is that the therapist does most of the work. Additional techniques such as muscle compression, joint mobilization and acupressure are also utilized during Thai massage treatment. ● Trigger Point Therapy Trigger point massage therapy is specifically designed to alleviate the source of the pain through cycles of isolated pressure and release. In this type of massage for trigger point therapy, the recipient actively participates through deep breathing as well as identifying the exact location and intensity of the discomfort. ● Sports Massage As its name would indicate, sports massage is specially designed for people who are involved in sports related physical activity. Unlike some other forms of massage, sports massage is not meant to be a relaxing experience but rather therapeutic. Using a combination of other massage techniques such as Swedish, Thai and deep tissue, the primary goal of sports massage is on preventing and treating sports-related injuries and increasing the performance of athletes. ● Hot Stone Massage Hot stone massage is a technique that utilizes heated, smooth stones to assist in the massage. The massage therapist places the stones on key points of the body to warm and relax muscles, thus allowing for deeper pressure to be applied. The massage therapist may also hold the hot stones and apply gentle pressure along the muscles to help achieve better results. Additional benefits of hot stone massage include improved circulation and relaxation of the central nervous system. |
